Syllabus
CH2101: Inorganic Chemistry-I

1. Bents rule, berrys pseudorotation, Fluxional behavior, participation of d orbital in main group compounds, concept of dipole moment, multiple bonding in main group compounds, introduction to some main group compounds and their bonding (e.g. phosphazene, borane, borazine), MO theory of heterodinuclear molecules
2. Valence Bond Theory (VBT) and its limitation; Crystal Field Theory (CFT): Crystal Field Effects of Octahedral Symmetry, Crystal Field Stabilization Energy(CFSE) & computing CFSE values of d1-d9 electronic configurations in different geometries; Tetrahedral Symmetry; Tetragonal Symmetry & Square Planar Complexes; Thermodynamic aspects of the CFSE; High-Spin, Low spin compounds; Spectrochemical Series. Molecular magnetism, diamagnetism, paramagnetism, Ferro and anti ferro magnetism, concept of susceptibility and magnetic moment, Curies Law.
3. Metal-carbon bonds, EAN rule, 16/18 electron rule, ?-acid ligands, Zeisss salt; Metal-oxygen/nitrogen bonding of various types.
4. Inorganic redox reactions- recapitulation of balancing equations, oxidation, reduction, Nernsts Equation, Redox processes in biological and inorganic systems
5. Haemoglobin, myoglobin, cooperativity, Redox based Fe-S clusters, N2 activation, comparison with Habers process;
6. Environmental Chemistry: ozone layer depletion, role arsenic, NOx, CFC; effect of ozone in lower atmosphere
