1. Introduction (3 lectures)
Nomenclature: IUPAC, Non-IUPAC, structure-based, and trade names
Exposure to important terminologies and definitions for example Molecular weight, size, glass transition temperature, crystallinity etc.
2. Polymer Synthesis and characterization
a) Introduction to chemistry of polymerization- step, chain and miscellaneous polymerizations.
b) Kinetics of polymerization
c) Various types of synthesis
Anionic, Cationic, ATRP, ROMP, RAFT, Free radical polymerization
d) Polymer characterization
I. Chemical analysis of polymers; spectroscopic methods-IR, NMR, ESR
II. X-Ray Diffraction analysis
III. Microscopy; light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy and Electron Diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy
IV. Thermal analysis; DSC, TGA
V. Physical testing; stress-strain properties in tension
3. Applications of synthetic polymers:
Importance; biological consideration, types of polymers- little emphasize on artificial heart, artificial skin, contact lenses, dental resins and essence of other important applications.
4. Physical aspects of polymers
