Course CodeCourse NameInstructor(s)
PH1101 Physics I Soumitro Banerjee

Preamble
This is a basic course on physics. Along with PH1201 this is supposed to serve as an introduction to and overview of basic physics. This will start off at a level appropriate for students who have passed out of highschool. The emphasis will be more on providing the students with a flavour of the subject than on an in-depth exposition.

Syllabus
Basic Mechanics: Newton's laws, Motion in 1d, System of Particles, Conservation of momentum and the center of mass. Conservative systems, potential energy. Conservation of energy - consequences for 1D motion.

Simple Harmonic Oscillator, Damped Oscillators, Forced oscillators, Resonance, Damped oscillators.

Basic Optics: Wave nature of light, Interference, Diffraction, Polarization

Basic Quantum Mechanics: Precursors, De Broglie hypothesis, Uncertainty, Expectations, Plane Waves,
Introduction to Schrodingers Equations, Examples of applications of Schrodinger's equation in 1D - particle in a box, square well and tunneling.

Prerequisite
None.
