Syllabus

  • Rationale: This course deals with the topic of Stratigraphy and exposes the students to the standard stratigraphic techniques such as lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, isotope stratigraphy. Furthermore, introduction of Precambrian crustal evolution and stratigraphy with emphasis on Indian sequences spanning Mesoarchaean to Phanerozoic time; application of different radiogenic isotope systematics for geochronology and tracers for rock evolution will be emphasized.

  • Principles of Stratigraphy, Review of isotope geology relevant to Precambrian geology.

  • Processes responsible for formation of the early crust. Archean cratons-origin of granite-greenstone belts. Archean-Proterozoic boundary.

  • Early atmosphere-hydrosphere and BIF.

  • Overview of Archean cratons and orogens of India. Platformal Proterozoic sedimenatry sequences of India. Supercontinents-assembly and breakup and influence on geologic events.

  • Evolution of major Phanerozoic System/Group/Supergroup (Paleozoic of Kashmir, Triassic of Spiti, Jurassic of Kutch, Cretaceous of Trichunapalli, Gondwana of Satpura, Godavari Pranhita, Neogene of Siwalik, Quaternary of Ganga) with special reference to their lithology and depositional environment/conditions.

  • Stratigraphic boundary problem with special reference to Pc/C, P/T and K/T boundaries of India.

  • Phanerozoic Petroliferous basins of India.

Prerequisite: Igneous & Metamorphic Petrology, Sedimentology
