Syllabus
1. Molecular Orbital Theory: Homo- and Hetero-dinuclear molecules. Principles of chemical bonding and molecular structure and their application to the chemistry of main group elements: Chemistry of p-block elements, Structure and bonding of B2H6, BeCl2.
2. Ligand Field Theory and Electronic Spectroscopy of transition metal compounds. MO theory of transition metal compounds in octahedral and tetrahedral geometry: effect of ? and ? bonding.
3. Complexes of ? -donor ligands: carbonyls, nitrosyls with an emphasis towards different bonding modes, geometries and spectroscopic methods for detailed electronic structure. Characterization of transition metal compounds by magnetic measurements and EPR Spectroscopy:
4. Nitrogen and Oxygen activation with transition metal complexes. Imido and nitrido, superoxo and peroxo complexes.
5. Reaction mechanism in transition metal complexes: inner-sphere and outer sphere reaction.
6. Multiple metal-metal bonding: Quadruple bonding in [Re2Cl8]2-, synthesis structure and MO theory. Quintuple bonding in transition metal complex with an example of low-valent low-coordinate Cr(I) compound
7. Contributions to Reversible Dioxygen Binding; Superoxide and Peroxide Dismutases. Oxidases and Oxygenases: Fe, Cu, Mn, Ni in biological systems. Bio-Inspired Oxidation Catalysis: Electronic structure, reactivity, spectroscopic and kinetic characterization of functional model compounds.
