This is an intermediate course in physics. It will provide students with an introduction to basics of electromagnetism and optics. It will make use of the basics of vector analysis and differential equation theory intorduces in MA1101 and MA1201. |

Waves and optics: Oscillators (damped, forced, coupled), Resonance, Coupled oscillations in lattices. Waves in stretched strings,The wave equation in 1+1 dimensions. D'Alembert solution. Solution by spearation of variables and normal modes.
Waves in elastic media and the wave equation in 3+1 dimension. Fermats principle and applications. Wave nature of light : interference,diffraction, and coherence. Maxwell's equations. EM waves in vacuum and isotropic media. Reflection and refraction at dielectric interfaces. |
