Structure and bonding in organic compounds: Basic bonding concepts, Modern theory of orbital mixing, Qualitative molecular orbital theory, Building group orbitals of simple organic molecules, Bonding and structure of reactive intermediates, Basic concepts of strain and stability.
Energetics and reaction mechanism: Kinetics and rate, Hammond postulate, Curtin-Hammet principle, Hammet relationship, Stereoelectronic effects on reactivity and mechanism, Radical reactions.
Pericyclic reactions: Cycloadditions, Sigmatropic rearrangements, Electrocylcic reactions, Chelotropic reactions, Hetero diels-alder reactions.
Organic photochemistry: Principles of photochemistry, Several useful reactions: Norrish reactions, Rearrangements, Photoisomerization, Topochemical reactions in solids etc.
Non-covalent interactions and supramolecular chemistry: Types of non-covalent forces, Origin of hydrogen bonding, Molecular recognition, Hydrophobic effect, Hydrogen bonds in proteins, Non-covalent retrosynthesis, Supramolecular Synthons
