Preamble
This is a basic course on physics. Along with PH1101 this is supposed to serve as an introduction to and overview of basic physics. This will start off at a level appropriate for students who have passed out of highschool. The emphasis will be more on providing the students with a flavour of the subject than on an in-depth exposition.

Syllabus

  • Basics of Electricity and Magnetism: Recapitulation of Coulomb and BiotSavart laws , Gauss, Ampere, Faraday's - both differential and integral versions.

  • Special Theory of Relativity: Einstein's postulates. The invariant interval. Lorentz boost, Phenomenological consequences. Redefinition of momentum. The mass energy equivalence.

  • Nuclear Physics: Binding energy, Bethe-Weizsacker semi-empirical mass formula, Nuclear reactions and decay. Basics of nuclear fission and fusion.
