Preamble
Introduction: Remote Sensing is the science of acquiring information about an object or a phenomenon kept at a distance. Eyes and ears can only see and listen a narrow band (visible wavelength of light) of extremely broad electromagnetic spectrum and sound frequency (audible frequency). In artificial remote sensing, we try to improve and thus include wider information channel to collect detailed information. It is a reflectance spectroscopy. Remote sensing is a powerful tool to study landscapes. It involves extracting information from spectral images and then analyse them to understand various earth surface processes. Geographic Information system (GIS) is software for mapping. All the related information can be gathered, plotted on the map and then various analyses can be done using GIS.

Syllabus
Course content- Elements of photogrammetry, elements of photo-interpretation, electromagnetic spectrum, emission range, film and imagery, sensors, spectroscopy and satellite images, spatial and temporal accuracy, satellite motion and row/path information, Elements of image analysis, Microwave remote sensing, Digital Elevation Model, Hyper spectral images, applications to earth sciences.
Course Content: Geological interpretations of air photos and imageries. Geographical Information System (GIS)- data structure, attribute data, thematic layers and query analysis. Hands on work on Geographical Information System (Arc GIS) software - data structure, attribute data, thematic layers and query analysis.

Use of Geographic Information system (GIS) software for mapping and collation of related information for plotting on the map; various analyses using Arc GIS software (ERDAS).
