Course CodeCourse NameInstructor(s)
PH1101 Mechanics I Golam Mortuza Hossain

Preamble
This is a basic course on physics. Along with PH1201 this is supposed to serve as an introduction to and overview of basic physics. This will start off at a level appropriate for students who have passed out of high school. The emphasis will be more on providing the students with a flavour of the subject than on an in-depth exposition.

Syllabus

  • Basics of vectors and vector calculus. Fundamental theorem of calculus. Introduction to partial derivatives.
    Polar coordinates.

  • Basics of second order linear ODEs - concept of complementary function and particular integrals.
Taylor expansion of analytic functions. Fourier series.

  • Basic Mechanics: Newton's laws, Non-inertial frames and pseudo forces. Motion in 1d, System of Particles,
Conservation of momentum and the center of mass. Conservative systems, potential energy. Conservation of
energy - consequences for 1D motion. Conservation of angular momentum. The moment of inertia tensor. Relevant applications.

  • Simple Harmonic Oscillator, Damped Oscillators, Forced oscillators, Resonance.

Prerequisite
None.
