1. Introduction: Importance of understanding reaction mechanisms, recap of the molecular
orbital pictures of the C-C bonds and the common functional groups. (3 Lectures) 2. Concept of stability: Resonance, hyperconjugation, inductive effects; Stability of reactive intermediates: carbocations (including non-classical carbocations), carbanions and radicals. (6 Lectures) 3. Strengths of acids/bases (2 Lectures) 4. Substitution Reactions: Nucleophilic reactions of aliphatic and aromatic compounds: SN1, SN2 (Walden inversion, basic stereochemistry), SNi, SNAr (6 Lectures) 5. Elimination reactions : E1, E2, E1cb, Zaytseff and Hoffmann; (4 Lectures) 6. Addition reactions: addition to C=C and aryl systems; nucleophilic addition to C=O, C=N, conjugated olefins and carbonyls; conjugate addition reactions; (6Lectures) 7. (C=O addition including ylides: sulphur and phosphorous ylides; Umpolung; basic organometallic reagents and their chemistry) coupling reactions eg. Suzuki, Heck, Nigishi, and metathesis reactions (4 Lectures) |
