| Details: | The history of human development has seen a focus on exponential growth. This is inconsistent with the existence of finite resources. In this context we examine the challenge of sustainability. Rockstrom’s analysis of planetary boundaries identified climate change, rate of biodiversity loss and the nitrogen cycle as boundaries that have been exceeded and create challenges for the safety of the earth. We discuss the global energy transition and the move towards net zero. We discuss India’s commitments in Paris and Glasgow and possible pathways to net zero. We highlight the global progress towards the sustainable development goals and discuss challenges and opportunities for sustainable science and research. |
