| Details: | Host-pathogen interactions underlie development and spread of any infectious disease. Modelling helps identify patterns in past data and predict possible future course of actions. It can be studied at multiple scales - from pathogen genome analysis to epidemiological compartment modelling of the host populations. It is also a highly interdisciplinary area requiring data inputs and modelling methods from different scientific fields. Viral pathogens are particularly interesting as many are obligatory parasites, and depend on the host for their propagation - leading to frequent mutations and the “arms race”. Large scale sequencing and computational analysis of pathogen genomes have been major contributors to the understanding of disease evolution today. |
