| Details: | It is generally believed that one cannot get a time reversal symmetry broken equilibrium state and, hence, directed transport is forbidden in equilibrium. Using a simple model I will show that a symmetry broken dimer will have to move in a particular direction when in equilibrium with a uniform heat bath in the absence of any external additional forcing. Obviously this will not go against any law of physics which I will emphasize on. I will then generalize this model to take into account Brownian motion with coordinate dependent damping and diffusivity. Such a scenario appears for Brownian particles near a boundary wall. I will show that the equilibrium distribution for such a particle at the minimum of a potential has to be a modified Boltzmann distribution where the new effective potential involves coordinate dependent damping and diffusivity. I will also discuss a classic experiment done by Faucheux and Libchaber in 1994. |
