| Description: | [Institute Colloquium] Prof. Jibamitra Ganguly (University of Arizona, USA) -- Water in Earth: Primary Storage, Origin and Its Role in the Creation of Pacific Ring of Fire |
| Date: | Wednesday, Nov 13, 2019 |
| Time: | 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. |
| Venue: | Meghnad Saha Lecture Theatre |
| Details: | Geochemical evidence shows that the total water inventory of the Earth is ~ 4-10 times that in oceans. In this talk I will discuss where and how the water is stored in the solid Earth, how the Earth got its water (delivered from exogenous sources and/or nebular condensation), and how the dehydration of subducting oceanic plates trigger volcanism leading to what is known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” The methodology involves a coordinated program of high pressure-temperature experimental studies, classical and statistical thermodynamic calculations (supplemented by density functional theory)and finite element modeling. |
