| Details: | We analyze continuous ground motion data from a seismograph station in NW Himalaya to quantify the reduction in ambient seismic noise during the coronavirus lockdown. Computation of power spectral density-probability density functions reveal a frequency dependent reduction in power of seismic noise between 1 and 10 Hz. This translates to reduction in seismic noise amplitude by 27-68% and an equivalent body wave magnitude change of 0.2-0.5. This is validated by computing the difference in power of local earthquakes recorded by the same station. From earthquake magnitude-frequency relationships we show that this noise reduction will improve earthquake detectability by a factor of three. |
