Exploring the frontiers of condensed matter and statistical physics using theory and simulations.

About us

We carry out the research in the broad area of theoretical and computational condensed matter physics. Our research focuses primarily on understanding of the condensed phases of quantum matter, in which the complex interplay of inter-particle interaction and the intrinsic disorder or impurities in the underlying matter leads to novel emergent phenomena.

It is only for the last forty years or so we started discovering exotic phases of matter whose properties, actually even their mere existence depends crucially on the interaction (or correlation) between the constituent electrons or ionsโ€”the fundamental ingredients of all condensed phases of matter. So paramount is their significance, that the whole subject of "condensed matter physics" turned essentially into the study of "strongly correlated systems".

Electrons in a condensed phase of matter often live in an inhomogeneous environment arising from various origins, including the presence of impurities, which are inherent to all real materials. Just like strong interactions, strong inhomogeneities are also hard to tackle in the conventional framework of quantum many body physics, and the going gets tough when correlations and disorder (both being strong) must be addressed simultaneously!

Often we resort to numerical simulations in the absence of a controlled analytical method, and we carry out computational and theoretical exploration in this sector of rapidly growing science. Our research spans a wide range of exciting topics, including:
