1. Introduction (3 lectures)

Nomenclature: IUPAC, Non-IUPAC, structure-based, and trade names

Exposure to important terminologies and definitions for example Molecular weight, size, glass transition temperature, crystallinity etc.



2. Polymer Synthesis and characterization

a) Introduction to chemistry of polymerization- step, chain and miscellaneous polymerizations. (2 lectures)

b) Kinetics of polymerization (2 lectures)

c) Various types of synthesis (6 lectures)

Anionic, Cationic, ATRP, ROMP, RAFT, Free radical polymerization

d) Polymer characterization (5 lectures)

I. Chemical analysis of polymers; spectroscopic methods-IR, NMR, ESR

II. X-Ray Diffraction analysis

III. Microscopy; light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy and Electron Diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy

IV. Thermal analysis; DSC, TGA

V. Physical testing; stress-strain properties in tension



3. Applications of synthetic polymers:(5 lectures)

Importance; biological consideration, types of polymers- little emphasize on artificial heart, artificial skin, contact lenses, dental resins and essence of other important applications.
