Hydrology and Geotechnical Engineering
Scope This course focuses on subsurface flow and transport, emphasizing on the role of groundwater in the hydrologic cycle, the relation of groundwater flow in geologic structure, hydrochemistry, and the management of contaminated groundwater. Course Content Introduction: Hydrological cycle, uses and supply of water, measurement of discharge; Modeling: Concept of mass balance, completely mixed stirred tank reactor, plug flow reactor, advection-diffusion equation, modeling conservative versus non-conservative pollutants, Use of numerical methods (Finite difference, finite elements) to solve equations; Aquifer parameters, with applications and measurement methods: specific yield, hydraulic conductivity, stream lines and potential lines, hydraulic gradient, Darcys law (on horizontal and on incline), Constant head test for hydraulic conductivity, falling head test for hydraulic conductivity, calculation of hydraulic conductivity in confined and unconfined aquifers using well pump tests, flow nets, Laplaces equation of continuity (describing boundary conditions, unidirectional, radial, confined, unconfined, steady state, transient flows); Groundwater pollution: groundwater contaminants, contaminant remediation (soil vapour extraction, in situ bioremediation, pump and treat); Groundwater exploration (resistivity survey Schlumberger and wenner configuration, seismic refraction, subsurface methods. Engineering classification of soils; Soil Properties: weight-volume relationships, consistency of soil, Atterberg limits, relative density of soils; Stresses in soils (total stress, effective stress and pore water pressure) |
