Basic mechanics
Newton's laws. Inertial frames. Motion in one dimension described through the solution of second order ODEs. (e.g. particle falling under gravity with viscous drag, a planet falling into the sun, spring-mass system). Motion in two and three dimensions - simple examples. Work energy theorem. Conservative forces and potential energy. One dimensional motion in a potential - graphical analysis. System of particles. Conservation of momentum and center of mass. The simple harmonic oscillator. Damped oscillator (linear damping). Forced oscillators and resonance. Coupled oscillators (simple examples). Basic optics Wave nature of light. 2-beam and multibeam inerference. Diffracion - Fraunhoffer and Fresnel. Single slit and double slit diffraction pattern. Polarization of light. Elements of quantum mechanics Wave particle Dualism;The uncertainity principle. Simple energy estimates based on it. The wave function and its physical interpretation. Operators. Calculation of expectation values and variances for simple one dimensional wave functions. The Schrodinger equation. Time independent Schrodinger equation and stationary states. Calculation of energy eigenvalues for a particle in a box and in a one dimensional well.
