Introduction: Lithospheric plate movements result in directed stress fields, causing rocks to deform at various scales. The objectives of this course are to identify the signatures of deformation in shallow crustal rocks from regional to microscopic scale, and also to understand the causative mechanisms of deformation at these different scales of observations. The course is designed to give an overview of the geometry and kinematics of various structural architectures associated with different tectonic settings.
Course Content: Concept of rock deformation; Primary structures in rocks; Use of primary structures to decipher geometry of deformed rocks; Unconformity; Three dimensional structure of faults; Structures in Convergent Boundaries; Structures in Divergent Boundaries; Strike-Slip structures; Stress & Strain: Mohr diagram; Experimental Rock Deformation & Material properties of deformed rocks; Mechanics of Faulting: Fracture criteria; Kinematics & Mechanics of Folding; Superposed folding; Joints, Veins: Geometry & Mechanics of formation; Foliations & Lineations: Geometry & Mechanics of Formation; Geometrical Analysis; Microstructures; Concept of Balanced Cross sections |
