Short Introduction: This is a core course for undergraduate students (BS-MS and PBIP) . Basic formalism and mathematical structure of Quantum Mechanics is discussed with examples in this course.
Prerequisites: Elementary level classical mechanics and quantum theory (Physics3, Physics 4) Credit:3 (3-0-0) Course outline: Postulates and mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics, ladder operators for harmonic oscillator, a brief discussion of Schroedinger's Equation in two and three dimensions, angular momentum and spin, symmetries,time independent and time dependent perturbation theory. Syllabus: Formalism: Postulates of Quantum Mechanics, state vectors, observables, operators,wavefunction Dynamics: Heisenberg picture and Schroedinger's Equation Harmonic oscillator: one dimensional S.H.O in ladder operator formalism A brief discussion of Schroedinger's Equation in 2D and 3D central and circular symmetric potential Angular momentum and spin Symmetries in QM: Parity, translational symmetry, time reversal, rotation group etc. Addition of angular momentum Time independent and time dependent perturbation theory |
