Structure and bonding in organic compounds: Basic bonding concepts; Modern theory of orbital mixing, qualitative molecular orbital theory; building simple organic molecules using group orbitals; bonding and structure of reactive intermediates.
Strain and stability: Thermochemistry of stable molecules and reactive intermediates; relationship between structure and energetics; basic conformational analysis; electronic effects; highly strained molecules. Reaction Stereochemistry: A quick look at molecular symmetry; Stereoselectivity and stereospecificity; topological and supramolecular stereochemistry; stereoelectronic effects in organic chemistry; orbital interaction rules; geometric restriction of the orbital overlap; stereoelectronic effects on conformations; anomeric effect; stereoelectronic effects on reactivity; effects through chemical bonds and through space; stereochemical issues in polymer chemistry; stereochemical issues in chemical biology. Pericyclic reactions: Concepts from electronic structure theory; results from HMO theory; perturbation theory; orbital mixing rules; organic chemistry and MO theory; Several useful reactions: Cycloadditions, sigmatropic rearrangements, electrocylcic reactions, chelotropic reactions; Practice problems in pericyclic reactions. Organic photochemistry: Principles of photochemistry; Grotthuss-Draper law; Stark-Einstein law; Franck-Condon Principle; Several useful reactions: Free radical reactions, electrocyclic reactions, photoisomerization, Norrish reactions etc.; Practice problems in photochemical reactions. Noncovalent interactions and supramolecular chemistry: Solutions; influence of reaction media in organic chemistry; types of noncovalent binding forces; origin of hydrogen bonding and molecular recognition; origin of hydrophobic effect; hydrogen bonds in proteins. |
