Syllabus
This course designed to provide undergraduate students with an introduction to how nature transforms and manipulate biologically relevant molecules. The first part of the course will focus on replacing chemical production methods with bio-based, where one of the aims is to achieve greater environmental sustainability. We will start by introducing the fundamentals of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, especially as they apply to large-scale production of small molecules. Case studies will be used to illustrate the concepts presented.
We will start by reviewing protein structures, biocatalysis and fundamentals of manipulation of microbes to produce molecules of interest. Towards the end of the first part of the course we will apply this knowledge and learn about the biochemistry of fuels from biomass.
The final part of the course will focus on understanding the clinical aspects of major metabolic pathways.
Lecture plan:
1. Protein structure, biocatalysis (5 lectures)
2. Protein engineering basics and applications (12 lectures)
3. Renewable energy, types of biofuels, biomass, pretreatment of biomass, enzymes for biomass hydrolysis, second and third generation fuels (12 lectures)
5. Clinical aspects of major metabolic pathways (10 lectures)

Internal evaluation: Presentation (thorough studies on a topic and a class presentation) and surprise quizzes 30
Midterm 20
Final 50
References and handouts will be provided in class.
