Ensembles, Density matrix; Microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical distribution; Partition function for simple systems: the ideal gas, paramagnetic systems etc., Quantum statistics; the M-B, B-E and F-D statistics; Classical limit; Equation of state for Bose and Fermi gases; Applications: the degenerate electron gas, specific heats of solids, the photon gas, ideal quantum gases; white dwarf stars; Pauli paramagnetism; Landau diamagnetism; Bose-Einstein condensation; Cluster expansion, Critical point for gas-liquid and magnetic systems, Landau mean field theory; Critical exponents (Van der Waal's gas); 1d Ising model- mean field theory, Boltzmann transport equation and the approach to equilibrium; applications to conductivity, viscosity.
