Preamble
Introduction: This course focuses on subsurface flow and transport, emphasizing on the role of groundwater in the hydrologic cycle, the relation of groundwater flow in geologic structure, hydrochemistry, and the management of contaminated groundwater. Additionally, the course focuses on the strength of soils and the stability of structures built on soils and rocks. It considers the stresses generated in soils both due to groundwater flow and external loading.

Syllabus
Course Content: subsurface flow and transport, emphasizing on the role of groundwater in the hydrologic cycle, the relation of groundwater flow in geologic structure, hydrochemistry, and the management of contaminated groundwater.

Engineering classification of soils, soil properties and weight-volume relationships, consistency of soil, Atterberg limits, relative density of soils; Stresses in soils (total stress, effective stress and pore water pressure), stresses in soils and their stability during upward and downward flow of groundwater, quick sand conditions
