Syllabus
Structure and bonding in organic compounds: Basic bonding concepts; Modern theory of orbital mixing, qualitative molecular orbital theory; building group orbitals of simple organic molecules; bonding and structure of reactive intermediates. Strain and stability: Thermochemistry of stable molecules and reactive intermediates; relationship between structure and energetics; basic conformational analysis; electronic effects; highly strained molecules. Reaction Stereochemistry: Symmetry, Stereoselectivity and stereospecificity; topological and supramolecular stereochemistry; orbital interaction rules; stereoelectronic effects on conformations; stereoelectronic effects on reactivity; stereochemical issues in polymer chemistry and chemical biology. Pericyclic reactions: Concepts from electronic structure theory; orbital correlation diagrams; orbital mixing rules; FMO theory; Several useful reactions: Cycloadditions, sigmatropic rearrangements, electrocylcic reactions, chelotropic reactions. Organic photochemistry: Principles of photochemistry; Several useful reactions: Free radical reactions, electrocyclic reactions, photoisomerization, Norrish reactions etc. Noncovalent interactions and supramolecular chemistry: Solutions; types of noncovalent forces; origin of hydrogen bonding, molecular recognition, hydrophobic effect; hydrogen bonds in proteins.
