Introduction: Study of the earth structure and its physical fields.
Course Content:
Seismology, earth structure and seismic sources: Theory of seismic waves, ray theory and travel time equations and earthquake source theory.
The earth's gravity field: Gravitational potential and field, the Earth's gravitational equipotential (geoid) and the reference ellipsoid. Measurement of the Earth's gravitational field and gravity anomalies. Isostasy, topography and associated gravity anomalies. The earth as a heat engine: Convective heat flow, calculation of simple geotherms, continental and oceanic heat flow, The adiabat and melting in the mantle. The deep interior of the earth: Internal structure of the Earth, convection in the mantle.
