Different concepts of Acid & Bases: Arrhenius theory, solvent system theory, protic theory. Strength of acid and base. HSAB principles. Super acid. Equilibrium of acid and bases in solution.
2. Bents rule, Berry pseudorotation, Fluxional behavior, participation of d orbital in main group compounds, concept of dipole moment, multiple bonding in main group compounds, introduction to some main group compounds and their bonding (e.g. phosphazene, borane, borazine).
3 Coordination compounds. Nomenclature of coordination compounds. Valence Bond Theory (VBT). Crystal Field Theory (CFT) and its effect in Octahedral, Tetrahedral and Square Planar complexes. Computing CFSE values of d1-d9 electronic configurations in different geometries; Thermodynamic aspects of the CFSE; High-Spin, Low spin compounds; Spectrochemical Series.
4. Radioactivity: Nature of radioactive reaction. Half life and average life period. Artificial radioactivity. Nuclear Reactions: Fission and fusion. Factors affecting nuclear reactions and its application
5: Inorganic redox reactions- recapitulation of balancing equations, oxidation, reduction. Oxidation Number. Disproportion reaction. Electrochemical cells: EMF of cells and electrode potentials. Factors affecting the EMF of half cell. Nernst Equation. Application of electrode potential. Reduction potential diagram (Latimer diagram). Redox processes in biological and inorganic systems. Corrosion and Fuel Cell.
6: Haemoglobin, myoglobin, cooperativity, Redox based Fe-S clusters, N2 activation, comparison with Habers process
7 Environmental Chemistry: Environmental Chemistry: ozone layer depletion, role arsenic, NOx, CFC; effect of ozone in lower atmosphere
