Discovery of Elements and the Periodic Table (1 lecture)

Historical journey of the discovery of dioxygen to organizing chemistry's unruly garden into the periodic table.

Electrons in atoms (6 lectures)

Introducing quantum mechanics; dual nature of light and matter; wave function for hydrogen atom: radial and angular part; introducing orbitals; shape of s and p orbitals; concept of spin; hydrogen like atoms; multielectron atoms; ionization energies; electron affinities

Molecules and molecular structures (2 lectures)

Types of bonding; weak non-bonded interactions; drawing molecules- Lewis Dot Structures; VSEPR (2)

Symmetry (3 lectures)

Importance of symmetry; symmetry elements and symmetry operations; point groups; determination of point group in molecules; classification of orbitals according to symmetry
Electrons in molecules: diatomics (6 lectures)

LCAO of AOs; introduction to molecular orbitals; types of covalent bonds; H2/He2 and their ions; homonuclear diatomics of the second period; photoelectron spectra; heteronuclear diatomics (HF, CO and NO); contours in MO and their use; bonding in metals and non-metals

Trends in bonding (3 lectures)

Electronic configuration and periodic trends; orbital energies and effective nuclear charges, atomic ionic sizes; electron affinities; trends in oxidation state across periodic table; trends in orbital energies and sizes; non-metal and metallic bonding

Bonding between elements (2 lectures)

Effect of orbital size and energy mismatch; classification of compounds as ionic or covalent; structural trends across periodic table; radius ratio rules; compounds with low coordination numbers

Describing organic reactions using orbitals (6 lectures)

Constructing MO diagram for organic molecules: hybridization; Redistribution of electrons in a reaction; Homo-LUMO interactions; interactions involving non-bonding LUMOs; interactions using sigma and pi bonding LUMOs; summarizing HOMO-LUMO interactions of various types; role of protonation in reactions; Intramolecular orbital reactions

Understanding the chemistry of main group elements (6 lectures)

Chemistry of the p-block elements: Hydrogen- Production and use; periodic trends in physical properties, periodic trends in chemical properties- oxidation states and valance, multiple bonds, acid-base properties; use of main group compounds in daily life
