1. Oxidation and reduction: Balancing redox equations, electrochemical cells, electrolysis and galvanic cells, reference electrode, standard potential, Nernst equation, working principle of pH electrode, corrosion, standard redox potential and relevance with Biology (5 lectures)
2. Acids and Bases: Arrhenius model, Brnsted model, Lewis model, correlation of Lewis model with MO theory, HSAB, pKa, correlation of HSAB with organic reactions, substituent effect, superacids(4 lectures) 3. Solids: Types of solids, amorphous/crystalline, lattice periodicity, symmetry elements, BCC, FCC, calculation of void space, different naturally available structures, thermodynamics of crystal formation, equivalence of lattice sites, miller indices(6 lectures) 4. Symmetry elements, character table, MOs of BeH2,CO2, H2O, NH3, HF2-and CO2using character table(20 lectures) 5. Shape of d-orbitals, general introduction to transition metals, crystal field and ligand field theory, MO of ML6and ML4, Color, magnetism, introduction to organometallic compounds(8 lectures) |
