This course focuses on subsurface flow and transport, emphasizing on the role of groundwater in the hydrologic cycle, the relation of groundwater flow in geologic structure, hydrochemistry, and the management of contaminated groundwater. Geomorphology part of this course deals with the study of earth surface processes and evolution of landforms. |

Hydrology: Subsurface flow and transport, emphasizing on the role of groundwater in the hydrologic cycle, the relation of groundwater flow in geologic structure, hydrochemistry, and the management of contaminated groundwater.
References: Groundwater Hydrology, David Keith Todd Geodynamics: Introduction, definitions, scope, brief overview of plate tectonics, heat budget of the earth, Urey number, BSE Urey number, insight into the rate of plate tectonic processes based on Urey number Lithosphere - Oceanic lithosphere - its growth with time, the different lithospheres based on parameters used (Thermal Boundary Layer, Rigidity, elastic, Maxwell models, Rayleigh number), Tools of geodynamic study - (i) Seismic -P, S and surface waves, Polarization, naming based on the travel paths like PKP, PKIKP etc, First motion solutions for fault, Beach balls, Earthquakes associated with the major types of plate boundaries. Moment magnitude measures for Earthquakes, (ii) Gravity - g, G, corrections and anomalies, Free Air, Bouguer. Compensation, Isostasy - Pratt and Airy models. Brief introduction to geoid, (iii) Paleomagnetism - Geocentric axial dipole model of earth magnetism, dipole moments and different kinds of magnetic substances - Paramagnetic, Diamagnetic, Ferromagnetic etc. Domains in single grains. Remanence - NRM, TRM, VRM, IRM etc. Vector model of superposed magnetisation and cleaning. Apparent and True polar wandering Geometrical analysis of plate movements - In two-dimensions using vector solutions, Triple junctions, Evolution of San Andreas Fault in California. Rotation on a sphere - instantaneous and finite rotations Driving mechanism of plate tectonics Back arc spreading models, microplates with reference to Burma microplate and Andaman sea Quick overview of large scale dynamics of the Himalaya (or the Andes) |
