Preamble
This course continues to apply the theoretical concepts covered in the Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology course to classify and understand the mineralogical evolution of igneous and metamorphic rocks through the use of thin section study and mineral and whole rock geochemistry.

Syllabus
Rationale: The objective of this laboratory course is to apply the theoretical concepts covered in the Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology course to recognize, describe, classify and understand the mineralogical evolution of igneous and metamorphic rocks through both hand specimen and thin section studies. The course will further enhance the Optical Mineralogy skills.

Part A Igneous petrology

Identification and classification of igneous rocks in hand specimen and through thin section study
Identification of minerals
Identification of igneous texture
Nomenclature of the rock
Interpretation of the setting of formation/genesis and evolution of the rock


Part B Metamorphic petrology

Identification and classification of metamorphic rocks in hand specimen and in thin section.
Identification of metamorphic minerals
Identification of metamorphic texture
Interpretation of the metamorphic facies, nomenclature of the rock
Identification of metamorphic reaction textures
Identification of protolith
Tectonic setting of formation likely evolution of the rock


Note:

Students need to revise their knowledge on mineralogy and optical mineralogy.
Students will require having a hand lens for practical classes.



Prerequisite
As this is a laboratory course, it is open to Earth Science majors only. Is tied to the Petrology Theory course.
