Logic and argument, deductive and inductive arguments, truth and validity.
Deductive logic: Categorical propositions: quality, quantity and distribution of terms, Categorical Syllogism: General Rules and Fallacies, Formal Proofs of Validity and Invalidity. Inductive logic: Argument by Analogy, Refutation by Logical Analogy. Conditions of applicability. Causal Connections: Meaning of Cause and Effect, Development of the idea of causality: Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Mill Scientific explanations: Explanations: Scientific and Unscientific, Proposing hypotheses, testing hypotheses. Development of Philosophical ideas (specifically in relation to science): Brief exposure to the ideas of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Mach, Popper. |
