This course gives an overview of the fieldof functional soft materials based on organic
building blocks.

1. Self-assembly in the design of soft materials: Introduction to soft materials; an
overview of the non-covalent forces in the context of the structural and
thermodynamic origin of molecular recognition processes leading to self-assembly.

2. Molecular switches and stimuli-responsive materials: Azobenzene, dithienylethene,
spiropyran and hydrazone based switches and their exploitation in the design of
functional materials which respond to external stimuli (pH, light, etc).

3. Liquid crystals: Definition and historical perspective of liquid crystals; mesogens and
mesophases; thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals; applications in liquid crystal
displays, photonic crystals and sensing. (3L)

4. Supramolecular catalysis: Macrocyclic cavitand molecules and self-assembled
metallocages as confined reaction vessels; catalysis on micellar and vesicular
surfaces. (3L)

5. Supramolecular polymers and gels: Examples of supramolecular polymers in organic
and aqueous media using H-bonding, metal coordination, host-guest complexation,
pi-pi stacking interactions, etc; molecular gels from small organic and amphiphilic
molecules. (4L)

6. Multicomponent self-assembled systems: The principle of size control and
compartmentalization in supramolecular assemblies; self-sorting. (2L)
