Course CodeCourse NameInstructor(s)
PH1201 Physics II Partha Mitra

Preamble
This is a basic course on physics. Along with PH1101 this is supposed to serve as an introduction to and overview of basic physics. This will start off at a level appropriate for students who have passed out of highschool. The emphasis will be more on providing the students with a flavour of the subject than on an in-depth exposition.

Syllabus

  • Basics of Electricity and Magnetism: Recapitulation of Coulomb and Biot-Savart laws; Gauss,
    Ampere, and Faraday's laws - both differential and integral versions; Uniqueness theorem(s);
    Method of images and other simple boundary value problems.
  • Partial differential equations, separation of variables in simple cases.
  • Maxwells equations; Wave equation.
  • Line-, surface- and volume-integrals, Stokes theorem, Gauss theorem; Differential operators in
    spherical and cylindrical coordinates.
