Syllabus
1. Introduction: Nomenclature: IUPAC, Non-IUPAC, structure-based and trade names.
Exposure to important terminologies and definitions for example Molecular weight, size, glass
transition temperature, crystallinity, etc. (5 Classes)
2. Polymer synthesis: Introduction to chemistry of polymerization; step, chain and miscellaneous
polymerizations: Anionic, Cationic, ATRP, ROMP, RAFT, etc. Kinetics of polymerization.
Chain copolymerization. (15 Classes)
3. Polymer characterization: Molecular weight determination by Size Exclusion Chomatography,
light scattering, MALDI-ToF, Coligative properties, spectroscopy, etc. (6 classes)
4. Polymer solution properties, chain conformation, mechanical properties, thermal properties,
polymer morphology. (10 classes)
6. Applications of synthetic polymers: Importance; biological consideration, types of polymerslittle emphasize on artificial heart, artificial skin, contact lenses, dental resins and essence of
other important applications. (4 Classes)
