Preamble
Introduction: Study of the earth structure and its physical fields.

Syllabus
Seismology, Earth structure and seismic sources: Theory of seismic waves, ray theory and travel
time equations and earthquake source theory. The earth's gravity field: Gravitational potential
and field, the Earth's gravitational equipotential (geoid) and the reference ellipsoid. Measurement
of the Earth's gravitational field and gravity anomalies. Isostasy, topography and associated
gravity anomalies. The Earth as a heat engine: Convective heat flow, calculation of simple
geotherms, continental and oceanic heat flow, the adiabat and melting in the mantle. The deep
interior of the Earth: Internal structure of the Earth, convection in the mantle.
