This course aims to introduce students to fundamental concepts of Sociology. The course will
enable them to understand sociology as a discipline with the synthesis with scientific philosophy. |

Classical sociologists like Karl Marx and Max Weber; Emile Durkheim and George Simmel will
be taught in the first two modules. This will lay the foundation of sociological orientation and the pairing of the founding fathers is important because they come from contrasting theoretical orientations. The next two modules will develop a critical understanding of the methodology of the discipline. This course will help them to decipher the dynamic nature of subjectivities that exist in reality. Students will be able to distinguish between commonsensical knowledge and sociological knowledge; along with this, they will understand the system of methods employed in sociology to gather information in a particular area. A proper understanding of this section will set the pace of an informed mode of inquiry. The last two module deals with sociological institutions, with the help of this students, can identify themselves more with the course. They will understand how everyone is placed in society and the word social will get more meaningful. Critical understanding of social institutions such as caste, class and tribe; kinship, family, marriage will depict the inter-related system of social norms and how these functions fulfill the social need. This understanding of social institutions will provide them with space open for critical judgment of social issues, that is, the social problem related to hierarchy and inequality. |
