The importance of mineralogy in Earth Sciences
Crystal chemistry - relationship of chemical composition to atomic structure
Classification and naming of minerals.
Structure, classification and properties of silicate minerals.
- Nesosilicates (Island silicates)
- Sorosilicates (Double island silicates)
- Inosilicates (Chain silicates)
- Phyllosilicates (Sheet silicates)
- Tectosilicates (Framework silicates)
- Cyclosilicates (Ring silicates)
Optical Mineralogy
- Wave form, Plane polarized light, Refraction in minerals, Isotropic and
anisotropic minerals, Use of analyzer, Interference of waves, Interference
colors, Refractive index, Optical indicatrix, Optical properties of common
rock forming minerals.

Petrology:
Introduction to petrology, rocks as building blocks of Earth.
Classification of rocks.
Igneous rocks: structure, texture, processes of formation.
Sedimentary rocks: structures, processes of formation.
Metamorphic rocks: metamorphism, metamorphic texture and structures.
Rocks as archives of Earths history.

Rock deformation studies:
