1. Electrons in Atoms: Dual nature of light and matter; wave function for hydrogen atom: radial and angular part; introducing orbitals; hydrogen like atoms; multielectron atoms; orbital pictures, orbital energies, radial probability distribution; shape of s and p orbitals (7 lectures)
2. Bonding: Introducing Molecular orbitals: linear combination of AOs; bonding and anti-bonding MO; symmetry labels; MO diagrams; overlap and overlap integral (qualitative); H 2 , He 2 and their ions: rules for forming MOs; types of MOs formed from 2s and 2p; qualitative MO diagram of homonuclear diatomics and correlation with photoelectronic spectra. MO diagrams of heteronuclear diatomics: LiH, HF, CO, and NO; HOMO and LUMO. Hybrid orbitals. (8 lectures) 3. Periodic Trends: Trends in Bonding: orbital energies and effective nuclear charges; variation of orbital energy; electronegativity and orbital energy. (1 lecture) 4. Properties of selected main group compound and application in daily life (2 lectures) 5. Bonding in organic Molecules: Hybrid atomic orbitals; MOs in halides, alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones; delocalized bonding: pi MOs of butadiene and allyl systems, conjugation and color; resonance. (3 Lectures) 6. A brief introduction to radicals, stability of radicals, persistent and captodative radicals; carbocations: stability, stable carbocations in nature, long-lived carbocations (Olah), carbanions (4 Lectures) 7. Strengths of acids and bases; pK a and pK b scales, factors governing the strengths of organic acids and bases (3 Lectures) |
