Preamble
This is practical course for 2nd year BS-MS students. Experiments are designed aligning the theoretical concepts they are learning in 2nd year Biochemistry and Biophysics theory courses.
Students will learn analysis of carbohydrates based on low-cost colorimetry tests, which are powerful and elegant and can be conducted with simple laboratory instruments. These experiments will strengthen their understanding about the structure and function of carbohydrates and mechanism of reactions. They will learn glucose estimation which is clinically important modern biochemistry experiment and can be conducted at any diagnostic laboratory. From Alkaline Phosphatase experiment, they will learn how to determine maximal reaction rate (Vmax) and Michaelis constant (Km) from Michaelis-Menten curve and Lineweaver-Burk curve. They will also learn void volume calculation, which is important for conducting Gel Filtration Chromatography.

Syllabus
Syllabus:

Qualitative analysis of Carbohydrates (Molischs test, Iodine test, Fehlings test, Barfoeds test, Bials test and Seliwanoffs Test)
Estimation of Glucose by GOD-POD method.
Kinetics of Alkaline Phosphatase.
Estimation of void volume by Gel Filtration Chromatography
Estimation of diffusion coefficient by single particle tracking
Estimating diffusion coefficient from KMnO4 and bead diffusion experiments.
