LS4209 Mass Spectrometry and its Application in Molecular Medicine Amit Kumar Mandal

Preamble
Mass spectrometry is an analytical platform that measures mass of molecules. Two soft-ionization techniques, ESI-MS and MALDI-MS are used to visualize large biomolecules. LC/ESI-MS can be used to quantify oxidative stress, characterization of hemoglobinopathies etc. Nano-LC/ESI-MS and 2D gel in combination with MALDI-MS platforms are used to discover disease biomarkers. Using native mass spectrometry, it is possible to analyze noncovalently bound biological complexes. Hydrogen/Deuterium exchange mass spectrometry provides conformational details of proteins associated with physiological/biochemical events. Imaging mass spectrometry provides the molecular portrait of the heterogeneous distribution of proteins and metabolites across a tissue section.
