CH4230 Instrumentation in Chemical Biology _ Not Yet Decided _

Preamble
This course is designed to provide students with hands-on proficiency with high-precision tools for observing, measuring, and modeling biomolecules. The course aims to bridge the gap between theoretical physics and biological applications. The student will learn how to extract quantitative data from complex systems

Syllabus
Fluorescence Spectroscopy
To study fluorescence emission, excitation spectra, and quenching. Plot Stern-Volmer
plot: F0/F vs [Q].
Circular Dichroism (CD) Spectroscopy
To estimate protein secondary structure.
CD measures differential absorption of left- and right-circularly polarized light.
Identify alpha-helix, beta-sheet, random coil signatures.
Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS)
To determine the hydrodynamic radius of biomolecules.
Chromatography Separation: Use of HPLC (e. g. quantifying caffeine in beverages or
quantifying prescription drugs in a combination)
Characterization of small molecules by mass spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy
Studying Antibody-Antigen Binding
Molecular Modeling
To visualize protein structures using PyMOL/Chimera and study small molecule-protein
interactions (Docking)
