School and workshop on Statistical Methods and Deep Machine Learning in High Energy Physics and Astrophysics

The Schools and the Workshop

IISER Kolkata invites applications from registered students (PhD/MS level) doing research in any of the Indian Universities/Laboratories/Institutes in the field of High Energy Physics or Astrophysics, for the third School and workshop on Statistical Methods and Deep Machine Learning in High Energy Physics and Astrophysics.

The ML4HEP volume 3, hosted by IISER Kolkata, has three components:

  • Pre-school: May 12 - May 30, 2025
    It will be conducted online covering basics in python, statistics, data handling libraries, some topics in machine learning and pytorch libraries.
    This is open to all valid applicants.
  • Main school: June 30 - July 12, 2025
    The main school will be held at IISER Kolkata campus in offline mode. It will cover advanced topics in statistics and machine learning.
    There are only 50 seats in the main school and the selection depends upon recommendation and performance in the pre-school
  • Workshop: The last three days of the main school (July 10-12) will be a workshop where one expects freshly trained students to take up on some research problems.
    All the main school participants are workshop participants too. Additional participation is by invitation only.

  • Publishing list of selected candidates for pre-school: May 10, 2025
  • Pre-school duration (online): May 12 - May 30, 2025
  • Publishing list of selected candidates for main school: June 02, 2025
  • Main school + Workshop duration (offline): June 30 - July 12, 2025

REGISTRATION

The registration is open for the pre-school and it is mandatory to register.

  • The applicant must be a registered student (PhD/MS level) at any of the Indian Universities/Laboratories/Institutes working in the field of High Energy Physics, Astrophysics or related fields. A certificate from the supervisor must be uploaded.
  • There is no registration fee for the pre-school.
  • All the selected candidates will be notified by May 10, 2025.

  • Python, RooFit, pyROOT, upROOT etc.
  • Basic Statistics: probability, distributions, maximum likelihood, error propagation, point estimation etc.
  • Basics of Neural Network, Decision Trees, Support Vector Machines (SVM) Deep Learning, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) etc.
  • Handson tutorials with PyTorch
