Director Message:

The IISER system was started by the then Ministry of Human Resources Development in 2006. Since then, the IISER Kolkata has emerged as a major center for science teaching and research in the country.

• The mandate of the IISERs is to train students for a research career. However, a significant fraction of students are not cut out for a life in academia and would like to build careers in other avenues of life, where a strong base in the basic sciences would help them. This includes science journalism, communication, industry, entrepreneurship, management, teaching, administration, etc.
• Our students undergo rigorous training in one of the ‘major’ disciplines: Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics. Even when a student is not employed in the area of his/her major, the training makes them ready to learn and excel in new career avenues.
• Through the Career Development Cell, we reach out to prospective employers in these areas and arrange direct interaction through which a company can pick up personnel with the right set of abilities and aptitudes. We request employers to make the most of it..
