Nepal-Sikkim Earthquake 18 September 2011


An earthquake of Magnitude (Mw) 6.9 (USGS) occured on 18th September 2011 on the Nepal-Sikkim Border and was followed by three smaller events, within the same day, of Magnitude 5.0, 4.5 and 4.2 (IMD) in Sikkim. These earthquakes killed several people in Sikkim and adjoining north Bengal and caused a great deal of damage to property.

All these earthquakes have been recorded by the seismograph at the IISER Kolkata Seismological Observatory (Mohanpur) and by the temporary network of stations in Sikkim Himalaya operated by the Seismology group of IISER Kolkata.

Earth Scientists from IISER Kolkata are closely studying these earthquakes and have provided general scientific information related to the quakes. A few of these are listed below:
