Hi,

This is Golam Mortuza Hossain. I am currently a Professor at the Department of Physical Sciences of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata ( IISER Kolkata ).

My Research

General relativity is an amazingly successful theory of gravitation. However, it predicts existence of singularities in regions of extreme densities. A suitable reconciliation of general relativity with quantum field theory, another tenet of modern physics, is needed to address the problem of singularity. However, even before the effects of `quantum theory of gravity' become dominant, there would be a regime where one would need to understand the implications of the quantum field theory in classical curved spacetime.

Research Interests

One of my current research interests is to study the effects of general relativity and quantum field theory for compact astrophysical objects such as black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs. Here one would need to apply the tools of quantum field theory in a curved spacetime.

My other research interests concern in the field of the so-called loop quantum cosmology (LQC) which is a mini-superspace approach using techniques of loop quantum gravity (LQG), a candidate quantum gravity theory. I am also interested to understand the implications of polymer quantization, quantization method used in LQG, of matter fields.

Apart from the quantum aspects, I am interested in studying the different classical aspects of modern cosmology.

Other Interests

Apart from Physics, I have interests in development of free softwares, in particular those related to natural language processing (NLP), machine learning.

During 2005-2008, I had experimented and coded for a free (as in freedom) machine translator written in Perl, for Bengali (my native language), known as Anubadok. The Anubadok MT system is well cited in the literature.

Anubadok translation system relies on a Penn Treebank Tagger for parts of speech tagging. For this purpose, I had to enhance several aspects of Eric Brill's rule-based tagger. The enhanced Parts-of-Speech (PoS) tagger is available as GPoSTTL and it is being widely used as well as cited in the literature.

Here is the link to my old-style blogging site that chronicles some of my interests related to computing in Bengali.
