Ek Pehal, an youth-led initiative by the students of IISER Kolkata, empowers children of the underprivileged and rock-bottom strata of the society. With a vision in mind, as a young movement of enthused dynamic crowd, we're sheltering to discover the true strengths and unleash the full potential and capability of the children living in and around the villages of Nadia, West Bengal. We believe a small combined investment of knowledge for a noble cause can bring wonderful solutions to regional problems and global solutions.
Our motto: "Empowering dreams, ek pehal at a time."

What we do ...

Regular Academics

Classes are arranged on-campus at the Lecture Hall Complex for students of Grade 6 and onwards, in state-of-the-art classrooms equipped with various facilities, thanks to the IISER Administration. Students from nearby settlements - 7no, Kantabelia, 16no, Ghoragacha - visit the campus from Monday to Saturday.

The programme focuses on holistic learning of Math, Science, and English. Instead of focusing on a regular curriculum, we integrate parts of study that boost their level of understanding about the subject, starting from the very basics to information they can utilize in their everyday life.

Math - Basic concepts like coordinate systems, geometry, and arithmetic operations. Emphasis is put on topics that will aid them in society.

Science - Aside from the usual topics taught in school, the curriculum of Science includes the importance of environment and conservation. A direct focus on sustainable development is instilled in the students.

Dukh ki baat hai… mai teen bar aya tha but padhne koi nhi aaya. ~ Tanmay Raj, Science

English - Vocabulary, reading comprehension, and creative writing are the basis of English as a subject in Ek Pehal. Translation of regional languages to English and back to their respective regional languages is also vital to learning the English language.

Computer Sessions

Sundays are reserved for integrated computer classes, covering courses on computer literacy, usage of computer applications, and basic programming. These classes are arranged in the Computer Centres at IISER Kolkata.

Extra-curricular Activities

On the occasions of various cultural and national events, students are urged to participate in cultural events hosted on campus. Dance and Drama performances are featured on stage among performances of students at IISER-K, at the Rabindranath Tagore Auditorium. Certain events are also organized by us to involve students in the alleviation of societal issues, like the Swachcha Bharat Abhiyan, where students were brought in for a themed drawing competition. Celebrated around mid-February, the Ek Pehal anniversary hosts various programmes, ranging from art demonstrations to drama.
