1. The lifetime, say X, of a unit (that could be a living organism, a mechanical component or a system of components) is a random variable. If Y denotes the lifetime of another unit, then the comparison of X and Y is a problem of interest in Reliability, Biometry, Engineering, Econometrics, Actuarial Sciences and many other fields. It may happen that even if X is, on the average, smaller than Y, the actual realization of X may be larger than that of Y. The study of this type of question is my primary interest.2. Another main interest of mine is the study of different ways of formalizing the idea that one random variable is more/less variable than the other random variable.3. Every system (it could be a car, a machine or something else) has some maintenance cost. After some time, although the system is functioning, its maintenance cost goes up in such a way that it becomes economical to replace the system. To find an optimal time of replacement of the system along with different properties of maintenance policies is another interest of mine.
